Every Scripture about Good Friday

Hello my friends!

I can not believe it’s Good Friday. Like how on earth is it Easter weekend right now??? It’s officially the strangest Easter of my entire life, but, it is Easter weekend none the less and it’s time for us to CELEBRATE!!!!

Today is Good Friday. Today is the day that we focus on the crucifixion of Jesus. The day He chose, of His own will, to lay His life down in the most brutal way possible. The day He gave His very breath, His blood, and His most precious connection to His Father away for the sole purpose of loving and choosing eternity with us. It’s truly mind blowing, and every year I am challenged to try and comprehend what it is that He did for us on this day. The truth is, I will never be able to comprehend it. But, I can live every day in the freedom and love it has given me, and I can spend this day remembering why I live my life with hope and life and love.

Every year I spend a portion of Good Friday reading every scripture in the Bible that points to this day, from the Old Testament to the New Testament. It is a beautiful reminder of the plan God has for us, His sovereignty, the way He orchestrated our salvation from the very moment we turned away from Him, and the eternity He offered us on that day. So, today I thought I would take you with me.

Here is a list of every portion of scripture in the Bible on Good Friday. At least I think it’s all of them, but I could be missing some. It’s a lot of them. We’ll go with that.

Well, most of them at least.

Well, most of them at least.

Genesis 3:1-24

I’m not going to put the entire portion of scripture in here, because it’s a long one. But this is the beginning of our need for a Savior. The moment we walked away from God and chose sin. The moment God started crafting a plan for our redemption and salvation.

Exodus 12

Once again, not going to put the entire chapter in here, but this is the first passover. The first representation of what Jesus would do for His people. The people are instructed here to sacrifice a spotless lamb and cover their door posts with it’s blood so that they will be saved from death. The perfect picture and foreshadowing of Jesus, our spotless lamb, sacrificed for us, covering us with His perfect blood, so that we could be saved from sin.

Psalm 22

Vs 1 “My God My God, why have you forsaken Me?'“

This chapter of the book of Psalms is a prophecy of the crucifixion of Jesus. Starting out with the words Jesus would utter from the cross before declaring “It is Finished” the chapter goes on to give a detailed description of the death of Jesus. Long before crucifixion was a thing, this verse described the piercing of His hands and feet, His incredible thirst, the fact that none of His bones would be broken. It’s all there, a perfect foreshadowing of our salvation.

Isaiah 53 (NKJV)

Who has believed our report?

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,

And made intercession for the transgressors.

I can’t not put the whole chapter in here, because it is my all time favorite. Beautifully displaying the entire life of Jesus. It shows the pain, torture, mockery, disgrace, and brutality of the day Jesus was killed while also showing His grace, mercy, love, righteousness, and sacrifice.

Zechariah 12:10

And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.

And now, we hit up the Gospels, the 4 accounts of Jesus’ life on earth, and the 4 accounts of the actual day of His crucifixion. If you haven’t read them all (and by all of them I mean the stories of Good Friday, not the entire Gospels, that would take forever.) I really encourage you to do that today! It’s amazing how the 4 eye witness accounts paint a full picture of the crucifixion from 4 different points of view.

The Last Supper

Matthew 26:26-35, Mark 14:10-31, Luke 22:7-34, John 13:1-30 (after this portion in John there is an incredible portion of scripture straight from the mouth of Jesus. It’s a must read at some point, but it’s pretty long if you’re working on getting through the whole Good Friday story.

The Garden of Gethsemane

Matthew 26:47-56, Mark 14:43-50, Luke 22:47-53, John 18:1-11 This is a story that shows the real suffering of Jesus. Him asking His Father if there is any other way, but submitting to His will. It’s also the moment Jesus is betrayed into the hands of the enemy.

Jesus faces the courts.

Matthew 26:57-75, Mark 15:1-20, Luke 22:63-23:25, John 18:12-19:16

These are the stories of Jesus before the High Priest, the Sanhedrin, and Pilate, this is where He is sentenced to Crucifixion.

Jesus’ Crucifixion and Burial

Matthew 27:32-66, Mark 15:21-47, Luke 23:26-56, John 19:17-42

These are the stories of the actual crucifixion of Jesus, from Him being hung on the cross, to dying, to being taken down and buried in Joseph’s tomb, these portions of scripture are very heavy. But, read them knowing that the story isn’t over yet.

So, there it all is!! All of the portions in the Bible regarding the crucifixion of Jesus. There are A LOT of Old Testament prophecies that I did not include, for the sake of this being a tolerably long and digestable blog post. But I hope this is a helpful resource on this Good Friday, and if you want one similar to this for Easter Sunday please let me know I would love to make one!

I love, love, love you all

1 Corinthians 16:13

“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”
